School of Kinesiology Name Change
DATE Ma y
29, 2008
TIME

On March 17, 2008, the School of Kinesiology membership overwhelmingly
voted in favour of the following motion: "Upon entry to the Faculty of Science
the School of Kinesiology will change its name to the
Department of
Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology,
and that the School will
initiate the process of the new name." According to the School's Constitution,
any change to the Constitution must be supported by at least a 2/3rds majority.
This motion was supported by an 82% majority of School members (23 in
favour,
5
opposed).
The rationale behind this initiative has been previously expressed and has
received unofficial support from the Deans of FAS and Science, as well as the
Chairs of MBB and Biology. The process by which our School chose this new
name was comprehensive, and took into account a wide range of stakeholders
from within SFU as well as from the greater community.
The name change initiative arose from a School retreat, in October 2006, held
to respond to anticipated pressures of the SFU restructuring initiative, the
Faculty of Health Sciences, and the changing nature of our own faculty
member research interests. At that time, a strong majority of School members
supported the view that our current name does not adequately reflect the
breadth of our academic or research activities. There was also strong support
for the idea that a different name would attract more, and a wider variety of,
both student and faculty applications. Consequently, an
ad hoc
reformulation
committee was formed to investigate both the name issue and programmatic
structure.
S ?
The reformulation committee's recommendation regarding a new name for our
unit took into account the results of an informal School poll, feedback from

1
.
stakeholders both within and outside the SFU, and careful consideration
regarding our desired future path. The reformulation committee also looked at
other similar programs across North America. The School poll indicated that
the strong majority of our School members wanted to pursue a name change. A
large number of school members and other stakeholders wanted to preserve
Kinesiology in the name. This factor, as well as the regional recognition of
SFU Kinesiology as a strong and vibrant undergraduate program, indicated that
it was important to include Kinesiology in the name and consider double-name
alternatives. "Biomedical Physiology" was chosen because it was felt to be less
over-arching than other possibilities (thereby avoiding overlap with other units
at SFU) and more complementary to the "Kinesiology" name. "Biomedical
Physiology" was chosen to be first in the new name to emphasize our area of
new growth, assist in attracting international students (especially graduate
students), expand our profile with undergraduate students interested in
postgraduate professional schools, and to help attract top quality faculty.
Our School membership requests the matter of our unit's name change to be
addressed by the appropriate Senate committee for consideration and approval.
We would be happy to provide additional documentation upon request.
