Currently the membership of SGSC includes "Graduate Issues Officer, SFSS

Simon Fraser University, effective May 1st 2008, SGSC recommends the
following change:
That SGSC membership be amended to change "Graduate Issues Officer, SFSS
(or designate)" to "President, GSS (or designate)"
Senators wishing to consult the

The Graduate Student Society at Simon Fraser University
Memorandum

Re: ?
Changes to SGSC composition
Since 1967, graduate students at SFU have been represented by the Simon Fraser Student Society
(SF55). At present, one seat on the Senate Graduate Studies Committee is filled
ex-officio
by the
Graduate Issues Officer of the Simon Fraser Student Society. As its name implies, the Graduate Issues
Officer coordinates matters related to graduate students for the SFSS.
In March of 2007, SFU students voted 82% in favour of the creation of a separate and independent
graduate student society to represent the interests of the graduate students of SFU. On July 26, 2007,
The Graduate Student Society at Simon Fraser University (GSS) was incorporated to fulfill that mandate.
On October 10, 2007, students at the annual general meeting of the SF55 voted more than 75% in favour
of amending the SFSS's by-laws to, among other things, end the membership of graduate students in the
SFSS and abolish the position of Graduate Issues Officer. These amendments take effect on May 1, 2008.
Since the amendments to the SFSS's by-laws are to be effective on May 1 of this year, it will mean that
the position of Graduate Issues Officer will cease to exist. Consequent to this, the GSS will begin full
operations on May 1, with a full slate of officers to manage its affairs. This slate of officers will include a
President of the Society, whose duties include "represent the Society as a whole to the University and
external communities".
These changes have motivated the following motion that I would like SGSC to consider at its next
meeting:
That the Committee recommend to the Senate that the terms of reference for the
Committee be amended to replace the Graduate Issues Officer of the Simon Fraser Student
Society as an
ex-officio
member of the Committee with the President of the Society of The
Graduate Student Society at Simon Fraser University as an
ex-officio
member of the
Committee.
