I am forwarding a request from the Faculty of Health Sciences for a change of
degree name from Master of Science in Population and Public Health to Master
of Public Health. This request was discussed at some length by Senate Graduate
. ?
Studies Committee, who unanimously recommend that this be taken forward to
the Degree Quality Assessment Board for approval. This is the first time that
such a request has come to my attention, and it may be necessary for the
University to check with the DQAB for the process to be followed.
SGSC supports this request for the following reasons:
1.
When the MSc program was established, the Faculty of Health Sciences was
being developed. The faculty has now recruited professors with experience
in public health programs elsewhere, and they believe that an MPH degree
is appropriate for their program.
2.
The MPH is an accreditable degree, and the Faculty is currently in the
process of seeking accreditation.
3.
We have had a significant level of interest in the master's program from
international students, and we anticipate that this level of interest will be
maintained. The MPH is an internationally recognized degree, and a change
of name will assist with international recruitment.
SGSC understands that the content and structure of the program will be
unchanged.

Dear Dr. Driver:
On behalf of the Faculty of Health Sciences, I am writing to request that
the degree name of
our Master
of
Science in Population and Public
Health
(MScPPH)
be changed to a
Master of Public Health
(MPH).
The
academic content of the degree remains the same.

Our rationale for requesting this change is as follows:
The MPH degree designation is that typically provided to accredited
master's degree programs in population and public health. Our
application for accreditation to the Council on Education for Public
Health has been accepted, and our self-study will be submitted this
coming spring. We are thus entitled to use the MPH designation.
As an accredited or accreditable degree, the MPH degree is the
internationally recognized credential for those entering the field of
population and public health. Our experience to date suggests that,
particularly outside of Canada, the designation of MSc-PPH is sometimes
confusing to potential students, employers, and academics. For this
reason, most public health programs in Canada are moving to the MPH
designation. Changing the name of the degree will bring our program in
alignment with institutions in Canada and abroad.
By moving to the MPH degree designation, Simon Fraser will be better
positioned to recruit international students, for whom the degree name is
especially important. We expect that all students
will
benefit in terms of
post-graduate employment by being awarded a degree which has
international stature.
Please let us know of any procedural steps we need to be aware of with
regard to SFU and the Ministry of Advanced Education.
This name change was approved unanimously by the Graduate Studies
Committee, and by the full Faculty Council, on October 9, 2007.
Sincerely yours,
Craig
