New Admission Process
DATE: ?
January 11, 2008
Please see the diagram illustrating the proposed and current admission process for BC12, next page.
Currently SFU's offers of admission are conditional until mid-August when we review final trax grades from
the Ministry. At that late stage, we either confirm or revoke previously issued conditional offers. The
proposed admission process brings forward the admission decision date to early May, gaining certainty for
students by over three months. Based on available data and analysis, we believe SFU can attract and retain

Currently, all high school applicants to SFU for the fall semester are granted conditional offers of admission,
provided they meet requisite standards on either self-reported grades or interim Ministry trax data. In the
case of self-reported grades (as early as 15 Dec) and interim Ministry trax data, all such offers are
conditional upon proof of required courses and grades on Final trax data. If the student does not meet the
faculty specific GPA, or faculty course requirements, the offer of admission may be cascaded to another
faculty/program, or revoked from the university entirely.
Proposed Process:
In order to recruit more top students to the university and provide all other applicants with a greater measure
of certainty, the Admissions office seeks to strengthen the offer we make to high school students. We would
begin by introducing a separate process for two cohorts of students.
Cohort A:
Top Students, 90%+, Major Entrance Scholarship Applicants:
These exceptionally well-qualified students who have applied for major entrance scholarships will
receive an offer of admission soon after submitting their self-reported grades. They will have their
marks verified by 15 March based on a transcript from their high school, submitted as part of their
scholarship application. At that time, they would receive a confirmed offer of admission.
Cohort B:
General Admission:
These students would receive a conditional offer of admission on self-reported grades that would
be verified on interim Ministry trax data on 1 May. At that time, they would receive a confirmed
offer of admission. ?

The confirmed offers of admission would also state that students are expected to maintain current academic
standing and offers will only be revoked in August if students do not achieve minimum calendar GPA or
specific Faculty/program requirements.
All students must meet faculty specific requirements and graduate from high school. No student would have
their offer of admission cascaded to another faculty/program or revoked, unless they fail to meet the specific
Faculty/program requirements of their confirmed area of study.
The admission requirement for writing the provincial exams remains in effect and the grades would be used
to a student's best advantage.
