OFFICE OF THE
ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT, ACADEMIC AND ASSOCIATE PROVOST
MEMO
TTENTION Senate
FROM Bit[ Krane, Chair
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
CC Jo Hinchtiffe. Secretary
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
RE Faculty of Science (SCUS 07-53)
DATE January 16, 2008
At its meeting of December 4, 2007 SCUS discussed the Faculty of Science's proposal to add an
Honors component to the joint major between Computing Science and Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry. SCUS supported this change and concluded that "as this was an existing joint
• major and Senate had directed the programs to provide an Honors option, ... in this case the
NOl and FPP need not be replicated or referred back to SCUP." Unfortunately, this proposal
was sent to the January 7, 2008 meeting of Senate for information (in S.08-15), rather than for
approval. To correct this oversight, I now recommend the following:
Motion
That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors the addition of an Honors
component to the joint major between Computing Science and Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry.
The previous Senate paper S.08-15 and the rationale for the Honors option submitted by Dean
Plischke are attached.

New Program Proposal
Joint Honours Program in Computing Science and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
(132 credit hours)
Calendar entry:
[To be added to the calendar after Joint Major in CS and MBB.1
Students must meet the criteria specified by each program (i.e. MBB and CS) for entering an
Honors program, and must seek the permission of the CS dept. In addition to the major program
requirements, MBB/CS joint honours students will complete both
of:
6 credits of 400 division
CPMT courses beyond those required for the joint major; and 6 credits of research-related MBB
courses, which can be fulfilled with MBB496-6.
RATIONALE: During its approval of the MBB joint major programs, Senate made it clear that
• ?
it would be desirable to provide an Honours degree option. Business and MBB have agreed
upon this model for their joint honours degree.
This program is identical to the CS-MBB Joint Major, but with the addition of 6 credits each
from CS (400 division courses) and MBB (a new course MBB 496 which has already been
created - see the calendar description at
