Dear Michael,
In keeping with the university's policy governing my performance review and
accountability to the Board, I am writing to summarize my priorities for the
year ahead.
Agenda 2009-10
I will continue during this year to implement the broad objectives of my
agenda for my second five year term:
• ?
• Increasing the differentiation of academic programmes and student
enrolment
• Increasing the intensity of research
• Deepening our engagement in the community
More specifically, I will continue to press for the further development of new
programmes in the health sciences, applied sciences, environment, and
communication, art and technology. However, my expectations for significant
further development in these areas are necessarily reduced by recognition of
- ?
future budget constraints. In light of these constraints, my preoccupation this
year will be managing the budget consultation and preparation in such a way
as to minimize damage to the development of these new and differentiated
programmes.
In relation to research, I will be working with the VP Research to ensure that
we sustain our competitive position in the arts, social sciences, and natural
sciences; that we improve our competitive position in the applied and health
sciences, and that we develop more effective strategies to pursue the lucrative
funding of large, multidisciplinary projects aligned with the strategic research
plan.

THINKING OF THE WORLD

Mr. Michael Francis
July 22, 2009
In relation to engagement in the community, I will concentrate on the further
pursuit of our plans for the development of the Surrey campus; on the
successful opening of the School for Contemporary Arts at Woodward's, and
the building of strong community partnerships and public profile as the result
of opening that facility to the community; and on closer alignment between
SFU and the city of Burnaby's economic development plan, especially
pursuing initiatives that support the growth of the high tech clusters in the city
and collaborative partnerships in recreation and athletics.
I will also be paying particular attention in the coming year to an effective
transition and hand-over to my successor as President of SFU. In this regard,
my focus will be (1) creating a more cohesive and integrated strategic planning
process, linking planning across all sectors of the university; (2) developing
longer term budget planning in light of public sector restraint, and (3)
strengthening our organizational capacity for advancement and government
relations through internal reorganization and a more effective use of
contractual and volunteer support from outside the university.
I will be happy to discuss any of these matters further with you. I look
forward to working with you and other members of the Board to achieve
these objectives.
Yours sincerely,
?
.
