Representation and Transition for the new Faculties

On 1 April 2009, the new Faculties of Communication, Art and Technology
(FCAT), and the Environment (ENV) will come into existence requiring some
adjustment both to the membership of Senate and to some of Senate's
committees. The size of Senate itself will increase from 60 to 68 people.
Senate membership
Two Faculty Senators need to be elected by and from each of the new Faculties
(FCAT and ENV) and two additional students need to be elected by the students
(one from each new Faculty). The Senate Assistant and Electoral Officer
Bobbie Grant plans to run the 2009 elections so that the terms of the new
Senators representing the two new Faculties will start on 1 April 2009, while the
terms of the other new Senators would take effect on 1 June 2009 as usual.
Senate Committee memberships
Where Senate committees require representation from all Faculties and these
appointments are filled by election by and from the Faculties, the new Faculty
representatives will be elected to start as committee members on 1 April 2009
and will have slightly longer terms than usual.
Where Senate committees require representation from all Faculties and these
positions are filled by election by Senate, it is suggested that the Deans of the
new Faculties be allowed to appoint individuals to those committees for the 2
month period 1 April to 30 May 2009 until the regular Senate committee
nomination and recruitment cycle takes place culminating with elections at

I request that some flexibility be given to the Senate Nominating Committee to
arrange to stagger terms of these positions - to try to ensure a balance in the
turnover of appointments for the sake of continuity.
Discussion at SCAR
I would like to discuss this with the Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules at
the meeting on 17 February 2009.
This should cover the majority of situations, but we may not have anticipated all
the possible options. I request that the Senate Nominating Committee be
empowered to work with the Faculties to make arrangements for appropriate
representation in the spirit of the overall proposed transition plan.
