Harding, Kevin
Fellow Senators,
My name is Kevin Harding, and I am a fourth year undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Social
Sciences, majoring in Political Science. I have served with many of you on Senate for the past two years, and
have been re-elected for a third term as a student senator. I am currently standing for election to the Senate
Committee on Undergraduate Studies and the Senate Committee on University Priorities. Additionally, I am
standing for election for the Vice Chair of Senate. I believe strongly in the importance of the Senate, and in the
integral role it plays in the direction of the university. I feel it is important for the Senate to openly and frankly
discuss and debate issues of importance to the academic community at SFU, and for all voices and viewpoints to
feel comfortable in sharing their views and hearing others, so that the proper and fair decision can be made. I
believe that I can be a Vice Chair who would ensure that everyone feels heard and understood at Senate, while
maintaining the order of the meeting, and I think this is vital to collegial university governance.
I believe that my two years of experience on Senate have allowed me to learn how the Senate works and how it
could work better, and I would appreciate your support in my election candidacy for SCUS, SCUP, and the
Vice Chair position. Thank you.

Unsoeld, Thomas
I am an international graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences. At this time, I am working on
my PhD project on the development of the nervous system. In the three and a half years I have spent at SFU, I
have been impressed with the many ways in which students are able to contribute to the decision-making process
at this university. I have served in SCODA over this past term and participated in several hearings as an Alternate
Student member. I strongly believe in the presumption of innocence and think that students accused of academic
dishonesty or misconduct should be able to receive all possible resources to present their case. However, I do
believe that violations of the principles of academic honesty undermine the equality of opportunities for all
students and should therefore be prosecuted appropriately. Having been an active board member, I consider
SCODA to be one of SPU's premiere organizational bodies that ensures this is carried out fairly. I would be
Wroud to serve this body again as an elected Student to be an active advocate on behalf of students' rights.

Revised June 1, 2009
Williams, Tony
I have been involved in a wide range of administrative duties at the Departmental, Faculty, and University level,
pretty much since I arrived at SFU in 1994. In Biological Sciences I have served on the Scholarships, Space and
Resource, Strategic Planning, Tenure & Promotion, and Undergraduate Curriculum Committees (Chair one
year), and our Course Planning Group. I was Associate Chair of the Department from 1998-2003 and Chair
from 2003-2008 (and as
ex-officio
member of the Graduate Studies Committee and Chair of all Departmental
Faculty and Staff Search Committees). For the last two years I have served on Senate, SCUP and SCUH. I was
also Faculty of Science representative on the SIMS Support Committee, have served on the University Animal
Care Committee, and on Search Committees for Director, UACC and Associate Registrar. In
all
my Committee
work I believe I have contributed significantly - even sometimes vociferously - to key discussions. Throughout I
have maintained a strong research record and an active research lab: I have successfully graduated 5 PhD students
(4 of whom now have Faculty positions) and 15 Masters students, and have published over 140 refereed research
articles and one book (on penguins!) with a second in the works.

Candidate Statements Received by May 14, 200
Chapman, Glenn
Professor, Engineering Science
Statement for Senate Library Committee
BSc (Eng. Physics) 1972, MSc 1975: Queen's University, Ontario; PhD 1982: McMaster
University, Ontario.
1980-90 research staff member, M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory: principal researcher developing laser
redundancy techniques for the wafer scale project. Since 1990, School of Engineering Science,
Simon Fraser University working in microfabrication technology, imaging sensors, biomedical
optics and micromachined sensors involving lasers. Author of 33 journal papers, 122 conference
papers, 2 book chapters and 17 patents granted with 9 other applications underway. Member of
the SFU Senate, and Senate Library Committee from 2008, and Library Budget Committee in
2009. Served with the faculty association executive committee since 2003, serving in positions as
Director, Vice president (Sept 2005-2006), President (2006-2007) and past president (2007-2008).
In addition he has been the chief negotiator for SFUFA on the Intellectual Property policy.
The SFU library is a vital tool for faculty and students for both the educational needs, and their
research. My past year on the Senate Library committee has given me a good understanding of
• ?
substantial challenges facing the library is this period of budget constraints and rising library costs.
Also my service on Senate and the Faculty Association Executive has given me considerable
experience in dealing directly with the SFU senior administration. This has lead to a good
understanding of the challenges facing the university, the library and faculty.
Corber, Stephen
Associate Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences
I am interested in being a member of ISEC again. I am very interested in international health and
strongly believe in the education benefits to be gained from student travel and the opportunity to
learn in different universities. The goals of this program are admirable.
In my 2 years serving on ISEC I have been impressed by the commitment and ability of the SFU
staff who coordinate the program.
I have many years experience working for an international agency and I hope that is helpful in
contributing to this committee.

I have had the opportunity to serve on the Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals since 2007
and have been Chair of that committee since 2008. My service on SCODA has allowed me to

draw on my prior experience as a lawyer and a judicial law clerk for judges at both the trial and
appellate court levels in Seattle before embarking on a career in academia. That training provided
me with a unique skill set that I have been pleased to apply on behalf of the University as a
member of SCODA, including the analytical tools with which to fairly evaluate facts and
procedures and uniformly apply University policy. I regard academic dishonesty as a complex
issue which requires fair consideration of both sides' arguments regarding the relevant facts and
the evenhanded but firm application of applicable University policy in the context of each
particular case. I would be pleased to continue to serve as a member of the committee if I can be
of service to the University in this capacity.

I believe that they can help build a better community - one that touches people on a personal
level. While pursuing my science degree at SFU, I have been actively involved in clubs such as
Club for the Cure, Bioinformatics Network for Students, Toastmaster Burnaby Mountain, SIFE

SFU, and Student for Mental Wellness to name a few. I am also serving on the
MBB
student
union, the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee, and for the Dean's Office at
the Faculty of Science. In the community, I am a board director for the Canadian Mental Health
Association Richmond Branch Pathway Clubhouse, and a youth project facilitator for Richmond
Youth Service Agency.
SFU has exposed me to many opportunities for personal growth and I would like to take this
chance to give back to the student community by serving on the SUAAC again. Combining my
passion in community involvement, I believe my extensive experience in and knowledge of
working in a committee structure would make me an ideal candidate for this position. Thank you
for considering my nomination.

I would herewith like to express my interest in having my name stand for a second ulill term as an
External Member of the Research Ethics Board of Simon Fraser University. My first full term
ends in May of this year. I have also discussed my interest with the current Chair of the REB,
Professor Simon Verdun-Jones.
My relationship with Simon Fraser University has spanned 30 years, 23 of those as Director of the
Public Policy Program in Continuing Studies. It was in this context that I worked very closely
with faculty in developing academic and community conferences and programs based on their
. ?
research. I have therefore had the privilege of coming into contact with a broad range of research
projects, particularly in those areas that involve human subjects, the purview of the Research
Ethics Board's work. In addition to my ongoing work with the media, I am currently working as
Program Advisor to the Education Program of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games.
Researchers at Simon Fraser have always been most prolific and their research very dynamic,
particularly in emergent areas of research. A large volume of this research triggers the need for
research ethics approval and an ongoing need for internal Board policy refinement. As I complete
my first full term on the Board in May, I have become fully familiar with the Tn-Council policies
that govern research funding
in
Canada and the internal policies of this Research Ethics Board:
Grappling with ever new issues around not only the research itself but important peripheral issues
such as secure data storage, for example, is an ongoing challenge and one that I very much enjoy
working on with my fellow Board members.
I would be most pleased to be considered for a second full term as an External Member of
theResearch Ethics Board of Simon Fraser University. Thank you very much.

Communication, but with a penchant for getting distracted and sidetracked into other worthy
activities. Having served one term as the Graduate Student rep. on SCIA, he would be happy to

continue the service for another term. David has a strong attendance and participation record on
the committee, and is able to bring his experience of living and teaching in Asia to the table. For
the past year, David has also been the Chair of the Communication Graduate Students Caucus.

I am running for re-election to SCAR and SPCSAB; if re-elected, this would be my second 2-
year term on SCAR and my third 2-year term on SPCSAB. Over the past 2 years on SCAR and
4 years on SPCSAB, I believe that my attention to detail has made me a valuable member of both
of these committees; I have also learned a great deal over my years on both SCAR and SPCSAB,
which leads me to believe that, if I am re-elected, my experience would make me even more
valuable over the next two years than I have been in the past.
Unsoeld, Thomas
I am an international graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences. At this time, I
am working on my PhD project on the development of the nervous system. In the three and a
half years I have spent at SFU, I have been impressed with the many ways in which students are
able to contribute to the decision-making process at this university. I have served in SCODA over
this past term and participated in several hearings as an Alternate Student member. I strongly
believe in the presumption of innocence and think that students accused of academic dishonesty
or misconduct should be able to receive all possible resources to present their case. However, I do
believe that violations of the principles of academic honesty undermine the equality of
opportunities for all students and should therefore be prosecuted appropriately. Having been an
active board member, I consider SCODA to be one of SFU's premiere organizational bodies that
ensures this is carried out fairly. I would be proud to serve this body again as an elected Student to
be an active advocate on behalf of students' rights.
Warner, D'Arcy
I have served on SCCS for four years and would like to continue my involvement with this
committee. I believe that my professional life and university experience bring a perspective that
will continue to be useful to this committee. Such experiences include the following:
> Strategic planning, organizational development and succession planning.
> Member of the Three-Year Midterm Review Committee
> Several years of senior management in Human Resources including training and development
and the leadership of employee groups.
> Member of EMBA Alumni Endowment Fund Committee.
> Past President, Alumni Executive Board and MBA Alumni Association.
> Recipient of Outstanding Alumni Award, 2002 - Service to the University.
I would appreciate your support in electing me to the Convocation Senator position on SCCS.

I have been involved in a wide range of administrative duties at the Departmental, Faculty, and
University level, pretty much since I arrived at SFU in 1994. In Biological Sciences I have served
on the Scholarships, Space and Resource, Strategic Planning, Tenure & Promotion, and
Undergraduate Curriculum Committees (Chair one year), and our Course Planning Group. I was
Associate Chair of the Department from 1998-2003 and Chair from 2003-2008 (and as
ex-officio
member of the Graduate Studies Committee and Chair of all Departmental Faculty and Staff
Search Committees). For the last two years I have served on Senate, SCUP and SCUH. I was also
Faculty of Science representative on the SIMS Support Committee, have served on the University
Animal Care Committee, and on Search Committees for Director, UACC and Associate
Registrar. In all my Committee work I believe I have contributed significantly - even sometimes
vociferously - to key discussions. Throughout I have maintained a strong research record and an
active research lab: I have successfully graduated 5 PhD students (4 of whom now have Faculty
positions) and 15 Masters students, and have published over 140 refereed research articles and one
book (on penguins!) with a second in the works.
