    RE: ?
Removing Principles of Math 12 as an admission requirement for the BA
    program in Health Sciences
    DATE: ?
    February 24, 2009
John O'Neil, Dean; Craig Janes, Associate Dean
The Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS)
unanimously agreed (Dec. 11, 2008) that Principles of Math 12 be removed as an
admission requirement for the BA program in Health Sciences. It should remain for
admission to the BSc program. FHS is asking SCUS to approve this.
    Rationale:
    1.
The content of the Health Sciences curriculum for Bachelor of Arts majors does
not require that students have the knowledge and skills taught in Principles of
Math 12 in BC secondary schools, which is a course designed to prepare
students for success in science and mathematics courses at the university level.
Health Sciences BA students are required to take a course in Epidemiology
(HSCI 330) and two courses in Statistics (STAT 201 or 203 plus STAT 302), but
the content in those courses does not require content from Principles of Math 12
    as a prerequisite.
    2.
Relaxing this requirement promises to make access to Health Sciences open to
more high school graduates. School counselors have communicated to our
recruitment staff that we can anticipate an increased number of applications to
our program if this requirement is eliminated. In addition, this should assist Health
Sciences in efforts to meet Senate-mandated enrolment targets.
