At its February 25, 2009 meeting SOUP reviewed and approved the name
of the new Environment Faculty as the "Faculty of Environment".
Motion
That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors
the name of the new Environment Faculty as the "Faculty of
Environment".

The name selected by faculty members who will be in the new Faculty and is being submitted
for Senate approval is:
Faculty of Environment.
This was selected by a majority vote from a several proposed names. The process for the vote
was managed by the acting Dean's Advisory Committee and followed the general procedure
that has been used for other naming processes in the University (detailed below). To ensure
impartiality and correct processing the online vote was managed by the University Electoral
. ?
Officer. There were considerable opportunities for discussion and consultation on various
names in electronic, online and face-to-face forums.
The temporary website for the new Faculty included a Faculty Naming webpage with:
• A welcome to the Faculty of Environment name information and discussion site.
• Points that merit consideration in naming the Faculty.
• Proposed names for the Faculty.
• A discussion page for the SFU Community (through Sakai).
• Description of the timing of this naming process in order to have the name approved
through Senate committees for the startup date of the new Faculty and to meet
deadlines for inclusion in upcoming University calendar.
• Background on the visioning that has already been done for the new Faculty.
The process consisted of:
• Naming committee and process were established.
• Committee established list of possible names.
• Name Exploration Website and Face-to-Face Forum were setup.
• Voters list was established.
• Committee advised their units of the vote process and information/discussion website.
• Online vote.
• Vote results was compiled and forwarded to Special Advisor.
• All faculty members and staff were notified of results.
• On receipt of vote results, the Special Advisor wrote memo to SCUP via the VPA.
• SCUP receives, discusses, votes to approve and recommend to Senate.
