Committee, French Department
Changes to French MA Program
RE:
Dear Paul,
Please find the changes to the French MA program for the next FASS GSC meeting on May 2'"',
2013.
1. Background
The Graduate Program Committee is proposing changes to the structure of die MA
program. These changes are prompted by the request from the Dean of Graduate Studies that all
master's degrees at the university consider requiring at least 30 units to avoid problems that have
arisen for students in the recognition of their degrees based on a lesser number of units.
The Committee is now proposing changes to the MA program including the deletion of the
project option and a re-working of the non-thesis option which will now be called the
MA-Extended
Essays
option. All references to the previous field examination will be deleted.
There will be an increase in the number of required courses, a decrease in the number of
units per course, an enhanced option to take courses outside the department, and a limit on the
number of "concurrently-offered 400/800" courses that may be taken as part of their degree. The
net effect of these changes should be a wider variety of graduate courses available to students.
In order to implement this new program, the department needs to create 2 new capstone
courses: FREN 896 (Thesis Proposal) and FREN 998 (Extended Essays) which will replace the MA
Field Examination (FREN 999). The department will remove FREN 897 (MA Project) and FREN
999 (MA Field Examination) when students currently enrolled will have completed their MA
program.
At the time of enrolment in their second term, students will be asked to declare their MA
option and confirm their senior supervisor.
2. Increase Course
Requirements
The Committee considered possible avenues to increase the number of units for the MA
Thesis and the MA Extended Essays. It was decided to increase the number of courses to give a
better understanding of different fields of research to students in linguistics and literature. At the
same time, it was judged necessary to reduce the number ofunits per course.
MA students will now have to complete 4 graduate courses instead of 3 for the Thesis
option and 7 graduate courses instead of 6 for the Extended Essays option. As the minimum
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
engaging the WORLD

number ofcourses required to complete both options is being increased, it was deemed necessary to
reduce the number of units per course from 5 to 3 units. Many departments of French in Canada
offer only 3-unit courses at the graduate level: UBC, University of Alberta, University of Toronto,
University of Western Ontario, Queen'sUniversity, and McGill University.
It was also decided to attribute 3 units for the drafting and the writing of the thesis proposal
for the MA Thesis to recognize the importance of this stage in the research process. Students in the
department spend at least one semester reading, researching, drafting, and writing their thesis
proposal. French 896 (MA Thesis Proposal) will be graded on a 'in progress' or 'complete'basis by
the student's supervisory committee. Faculty members agreed on the need for the department to
offer a mandatory methodology course that students must take during their first or second semester
in the program. When the current French 803 becomes a required course, it will ensure students
have a basic knowledge of the methodologies in their respective fields of research. This course will
help them to do research more efficiendy, and itwill also improve their writing skills.
Because the Department of French offers only 2 graduate courses every semester, it was
decided toallow students to take up to 1graduate course for the Thesis option or 3graduate courses
for the Extended Essays option in their field ofresearch, orin a related field, inanother department
atSFU oratanother university. Students can benefit from the knowledge they are likely togain from
specialists in their field, or related fields, who teach in other departments or universities. This
measure will also help students interested in interdisciplinary approaches reach their academic goals.
Considering the limited teaching resources of our department, it was decided that students can take
concurrendy-offered 400/800-level courses. Currendy, graduate seminars are matched up with 400-
level courses in our department: a student who takes 3 graduate courses is also taking 3 400/800-
level courses. In the proposed program, students will be allowed to take a maximum of 3 400/800-
level courses (also known as piggy-backing) to complete the MA. Graduate students will not be
permitted to repeat the same course or topic twice. Graduate students will always be registered in
the 800 level course of any concurrendy-offered 400/800 course. Graduate students in these courses
will systematically be required to complete assignments at the graduate level, including research-
based papers ofbetween 20 and 25 pages,
bibliographies critiques, etats presents,
as well as reading lists
that exceed in number anddifficulty (with secondary sources) thedirectives for 400-level students.
For the MA Extended Essays, a final work will be required in the form of two extended
essays of 25 pages each including bibliography. Essays will be evaluated by course instructors. A
rninimum grade of B will be required for each essay.
The MA Thesis has now a total of 30 units instead of 21:
A. Students have to take a rninimum 4 courses of 3 units each (12 units), including a
methodology course (French 803).
B. Students have to write a five-page thesis proposal before undertaking the actual thesis.
They will receive 3 units if the proposal is judged satisfactory by their supervisory committee
(FREN 896).
C. Students must complete a thesis ofa minimum of70 pages to a maximum of90 pages in
linguistics or literature in accordance with the Graduate General Regulations (1.9 - 1.11). If
the thesis is evaluated as satisfactory, they will receive 15 units.
The MA Extended Essays has also a totalof 30 units:
A. Students have to take arninimum of7courses of3units each in literature and linguistics.
B. Students have to complete two final extended essays, for which they are granted 9 units
(4.5 each). The two essays must be 25 pages each including the bibliography.
The MA Extended Essays is an ideal option for teachers of French in elementary schools, high
schools, and for aspiring college instructors. It is also an interesting option for professionals
working, for example, inadministration, communications, orgovernment.
