COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Research has clearly demonstrated that reading ability is directly related to overall school success. Thus,
providing effective reading instruction is the most important task that the classroom teacher faces. In this
course, we will seek to develop an understanding of best practice in reading instruction through an
examination of the research and practical application of the principles learned. Students will participate in
a variety of discussion formats and hands-on experiences designed to facilitate understanding of key
components of reading instruction and development. Emphasis will be made on designing instruction
that meets the needs of diverse learners in the regular education classroom.
OBJECTIVES:
Students will gain a basic understanding of the research behind effective reading instruction and be able
to apply their knowledge when designing reading lessons.

Class Participation 10%
Assignments and Presentations 60%
Final project 30%
