PREREQUISITES

DESCRIPTION
This course will examine the foundations of curriculum development in relation to teaching practice.
Participants will examine the historical, social and political forces that influence curriculum. Basic
assumptions and beliefs that underlie the various curricula will be studies. One of the primary goals
of the course is to help students identify their own philosophy of education and to see how good
practice is grounded in good theory. The course will also help familiarize students with some of the
contemporary issues affecting curriculum development and teaching practice. Among the topics
that will be addressed will be curriculum and information technology and curriculum and cultural
diversity.
OBJECTIVES
• to clarify the concept of "curriculum"
• to develop various approaches to curriculum
• to develop the skills necessary to assess curricula and to develop new curricula
• to engage in small and large group discussions regarding contemporary issues in curriculum
development
REQUIREMENTS
• Class attendance and participation
• In class group assignments, presentations and debates
• Readings from text(s) and articles accompanied by journal responses
• Individual paper
