COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to introduce the generalist and the specialist to the theory and principles of art education.
Topics to be explored will include discipline based art education, an interactive approach to art history and art works,
and the developmental stages of children in art. Emphasis will be placed on familiarizing the participants with
creating and communicating in art through hands on / minds on experiences and the development of a unit plan.
Materials and processes explored will be those that are within the range of possibility for elementary and secondary
teachers.
OBJECTIVES
Experience in art is not necessary as part of the goal of the program is to give non-specialists the confidence to plan and
teach art, as well as integrate it with other subject areas. Participants will also complete a visual literacy assignment
that will familiarize them with a broad range of materials and processes. Students are expected to supply most of their
own art materials (see list on reverse), attend two gallery field trips which will count as in-class sessions, and pay a
photo-copying fee for selected readings. Students who come from out of town may want to bring art books and other visuals
to help with image development in the visual literacy assignment.
