OVERVIEW:
Ideally, social studies offers educators the opportunity to create curriculum that is conceptually
and methodoligically rich, addressing interconnected historical and current issues within a
framework where traditionally disparate disciplines: history, geography, anthropology and
political science for example, have achieved some level of integration. In this section of Educ.
474, we will examine our own and others' beliefs about social studies theory and practices,
grapple with the notion of subject integration as it applies to social studies and discuss the
relationship between content and methodology in the social studies classroom. Finally, as we
progress through the course we will scrutinize social studies goals and objectives, debating the
vital question: Why Social Studies? Six general topic areas will frame these discussions and
will provide starting points for oral presentations, unit and lesson plans and the term paper.
1)
Social Issues and Current Events as Curriculum Content.
2)
Developing a global perspective, enhancing local understanding.
3)
Values, social responsibility and active citizenship.
4)
Conflict studies and problem solving—the classroom and the world.
5)
Whole language in the Social Studies Classroom: Reading, Writing and Research.
6)
Beyond anthropology: the use of studying peoples and cultures.
