CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION IN TEACHING
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE ?
(E01.00)
Kathleen Nicoletti
email: knicolet@sfu.ca
Tuesday 5:30-9:20 WMC 2503
PREREQUISITE:
60 credit hours plus a linguistics course.
Course Description:
This course will address social, cultural, and educational issues related to learners for whom English is a
second language. The goal is to provide a broad introduction to the field of ESL teaching, and to the
complexities of understanding linguistic and cultural diversity. These issues include (but are not limited
to): relationships between languages, cultures, and practices; language use in and out of school; theories
of second language acquisition; design and implementation of language programs in schools; pedagogy
and methods for teaching languages and literacies; the social context of schooling and learning; and
social, cultural and psychological factors that affect language learning and academic performance of
non-native English speakers.
Course Requirements:
This is an issues-based class and will be conducted, in large part, through group discussions and tasks.
Participants must complete readings and assignments on time and actively engage in activities. It will be
impossible to do the latter without the former. Each week, in preparation, you will have assigned
readings. There are also a number of written assignments that are designed to facilitate reflection and
integration of the issues, as well as to link theory to practice.
Grades:
Grades will be based on the quality and consistency in meeting the requirements described above.
Course Materials:
• Gibbons, P. 2002. Scaffolding language, scaffolding learning: Teaching second language learners in
the mainstream classroom. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann.
• Courseware book: The courseware book is a collection of book chapters and articles that are tied to
the study units.
