PREREQUISITE:

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Although Early Childhood Education is available to all students with 60 hours of credit,
it is a course for educators and others working with young children in educational
environment.Role play, group discussion, readings, audiovisual and curriculum
materials will be used to assist participants to develop definitions of their professional
roles in an early childhood setting, and activities and programs which will promote
positive educational environments for young children.
OBJECTIVES
1. To develop an understanding of the historical and philosophical
underpinnings to the theory and practice of ECE.
2.
To examine current issues related to Early Childhood Education.
3.
To examine current research related to Early Childhood Education.
4.
To develop child observation skills and strategies.
GRADING
Final grades will be based on a variety of sources that may include some or all of the

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This course is intended as a basic theoretical introduction to the education of
young children in preschool, daycare, and public school settings. Major areas of
focus will include:
1.
Historical and philosophical issues in ECE.
2.
The psychological foundations of a variety of ECE instructional practices,
from teacher-directed lessons to instructionally designed play environments.
3.
Applications of selected theories relevant to instructional planning at the
preschool and primary levels.
PREREQUISITE: 60 credit hours.
