COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course offers a theoretical framework and practical information about teaching a
language arts program in primary and intermediate classrooms.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed with the current changes in the language arts curriculum in B.C.
in mind. The instructor will model some of the possibilities that exist in teaching an
integrated program of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in grades K-8. The
course is designed to enable students to reflect on language learning and to assist you in
developing a repertoire of methods and materials that will enhance language learning in
a classroom.

Overview of language and literacy
Connections between reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing
Creating a literate environment
The role of strategy instruction
The role of literature
Language growth & development
Language and learning across the curriculum
Assessment and evaluation of a language arts program
TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS
To bring in and discuss children's literature, to create an integrated language arts unit, to
use writing as a vehicle for understanding, peer teaching, and the reading, discussion and
evaluation of assigned and selected readings.
