COURSE DESCRIPTION
Basic knowledge of French is recommended. Participants will be expected to increase their facility and
level of confidence in the use of French in the classroom to the best of their ability. The course will be
taught in French and in English.
The course will be practical and based on effective implementation of a multi-dimensional curriculum
using the communicative-experiential approach as recommended in the BC Core French IRP (5-12).
Participants will become familiar with theories and principles that guide FSL curriculum design and
have maximum opportunities to practice integrating these into their unit and lesson planning.
OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the theory and methodology of second language (L2) learning
• Be familiar with the BC Core French IRP (5-12)
• Implement a multi-dimensional curriculum using the communicative-experiential approach
• Plan cohesive units and lessons using the Backward Design model
• Develop a repertoire of effective L2 teaching strategies with emphasis on cooperative learning
and multiple intelligences
• Develop a repertoire of effective L2 assessment techniques based on the principle of assessment
for learning and criterion-referenced evaluation
• Integrate technology into their lessons
• Build language proficiency through an interactive approach and modeling
• Learn about new program delivery models for FSL and current published resources
ACTIVITIES
During this course, participants will:
• Read relevant research literature and articles pertaining to L2 teaching and learning
and write reflections based on these readings
• Review and discuss various theories and principles of L2 acquisition
• Practice teaching strategies focused on communication and interaction
• Analyze and apply the various elements of the Core French IRP 5-12 in unit and lesson plan design
• Compare programs presently being used in districts
• Develop and present demonstration lessons which include a variety of visual, audio,

and audio-visual materials, as well as technology
Critique various L2 assessment techniques and develop evaluation rubrics
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
• Regular attendance and active participation in all activities such as discussions, group work, and
presentations
• All assignments must be completed and handed in on time
• Several in-class presentations including demonstration lessons and analysis
• Weekly reading reflections
• Development of unit and lesson plans
• Access to the Internet and an active e-mail account
READINGS
Selected readings presented by the instructor via First Class e-mail. There will be no required text for
this course but recommended books will be available on short-term loan at the SFU library.
