PREREQUISITE
60 credit hours and ENGL 370 or a linguistics course.
DESCRIPTION
The course is designed for prospective and beginning teachers to learn more about theory, research, and
practice in teaching English as an additional language (EAL) in today's multilingual classrooms.
Through readings, hands-on assignments, group presentations, and discussions, we will explore an
integrated approach to working with both young and adult EAL learners to develop language skills
through designing and delivering curriculum, instruction and assessment.
OBJECTIVES
• To become familiar with approaches and techniques for teaching various aspects of English language
in multilingual classrooms
• To develop a basic understanding of conducting small-scale qualitative research in support of
teaching and learning
• To explore one's own attitudes and approaches to language learning and teaching, and to develop an
awareness of the sociopolitical contexts within which the profession of TEAL is situated

- TEAL and Me: An initial bio entry to reflect on personal understandings and beliefs of second
language
learning and teaching (10%). Due: Electronically 9:00 am May 13th; Hardcopy: May 15th, 2008 in
class
- TEAL and Me: A final reflection (30%). Due: the last day of the class.
