This course is designed for beginning teachers who wish to examine fundamental
principles underlying the Language Arts curriculum and explore means of selecting
and developing materials, strategies and techniques to create a rich learning
environment for their students. The course will contain theoretical and practical
components, and students will be expected to:
- demonstrate an understanding of child development and of curriculum goals
in designing appropriate learning activities;
- examine various methods for developing the communication skills of
reading, writing, listening and speaking;
- critically examine resources for motivating and/or teaching language skills;
- examine the role of the teacher in Language Arts Education
TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
-
child development and the acquisition of language;
- the Language Arts curriculum -- planning for and evaluating student learning;
- reading instruction, comprehension, vocabulary development;
- the writing process -- personal, literary and public writing; spelling and language
conventions;
- aural/oral language -- drama, use of audio-visual resources
- children's literature, story telling;
- resources and materials -- texts,
films,
records;
- the computer in the language arts classroom.
