Education 464 LANGLEY (90-3)
?
Early Childhood Education?
R. Gehibach, Instructor
I have worked
hard to develop
a course that will be a challenging, relevant and
enjoyable experience for you. I have attempted to achieve a balance between
theoretical and practical issues and between historical and contemporary
perspectives on the organization
of educational experiences for young children.
One of the new and distinctive features of the Course is the design of the readings
and the structure of your assignments. The
reading for the course consists of two
distinct components: (1.) a set of background readings taken from important
historical and contemporary works in early childhood education, and (2) the
recently published Primary Program to be used as a guide for primary education
in British Columbia. The first set of readings will provide you with an opportunity
to read original material from scholars such as Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel,
Montessori and others, persons who have shaped the discipline of early childhood
education. The Primary Pro
g
ram will provide a completely contemporary outline
of how early childhood education should be achieved. Your work for the course
will consist in moving between the two sets of issues and ideas.
There are three paper assignments for the Course. They are designed to give you
focused progressively challenges in the processing of key ideas. There is no fixed
sequence for your completion of the readings. Rather, you will organize your own
reading as is appropriate for you to complete the paper assignments. In a way, you
will use the readings in
much the same way that a
primary student uses the
environment of an interest centre or play setting as a resource for learning.
As you progress through the assignments and the readings, one of your most
important
tasks will be to structure your inquiry so that your reading is, as much
as possible, "reading for information," rather than reading for its own sake. I am
confident that this will
enable you to make the most efficient and enjoyable use of
your scholarly 'environment.'
I will be available, of course, to provide additional
assistance.
Best wishes. Enjoy'

of educational experiences for young children.
One of the new and distinctive features of the Course is the design of the readings
and the structure of your assignments. The reading for the course consists of two
distinct components: (1) a set of background readings taken from important
historical and contemporary works in early childhood education, and
(2)
the
recently published Primary Program to be used as a guide for primary education
in British Columbia. The first set of readings will provide you with an opportunity
to read original material from scholars such as Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel,
Montessori and others, persons who have shaped the discipline of early childhood
education. The Primary Program will provide a completely contemporary outline
of how early childhood education should be achieved.
In a way, you
will use the readings in much the same way that a primary student uses the
environment of an interest centre or play setting as a resource for learning.
As you progress through the assignments and the readings, one of your most
important tasks will be to structure your
inquiry so that your
reading is, as much
as possible. 'reading for information," rather than reading for its own sake. I am
confident that this will enable you to make the most efficient and enjoyable use of
your scholarly "environment." I will be available, of course, to provide additional
assistance.
Best wishes. Enjoy!
