Special Topics: Law for the Classroom Teacher
Prerequisite: Education 401/2 or the equivalent of first year practicum.
This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to Canadian law and the
legal process. The course is designed to introduce teachers and administrative
officers to a broad range of legal topics and concepts, particularly as they relate
to the
B.C.
education setting. No prior legal knowledge or experience is
required. The different areas of the law that will be discussed include:
* tort law and negligence
* contract law
* family law (divorce, custody, maintenance)
* labour law and collective bargaining
* criminal law
* the Young Offender's Act
* administrative law (due process and natural justice)
* constitutional law and the Charter of Rights
Required Text:
S. M. Waddams, Introduction to the Study of Law (2nd Edition) (Toronto:
Carswell, 1983)
A legal workbook will be distributed in class.
Texts on Reserve:
G. Gall, The Canadian Legal System (2nd Edition) (Toronto: Carswell, 1983).
M. E. Manley-Casimir and T. A. Sussel, Courts in the Classroom: Education
and the Charter of Rights (Calgary, Detselig Press, 1986).
Course Requirements: Students will be evaluated on the basis of class
participation (20%), an in-class presentation (40%), and a research paper
(40%).
