EDUC 401/402 or equivalent.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will focus on fundamental principles underlying the language arts
curriculum and will explore the selection and development of materials and
strategies, from a broad range of sources, to create a rich learning environment
for children. The course will include both theoretical and practical components.
The integration of the language arts across the curriculum will be emphasized.
Students will have the opportunity to learn by experiencing current practices (for
example: the writing process, reader response, story telling) first hand and by
thinking and discussing in large and small groups, in addition to presentations
made by the instructor. Cooperative learning strategies will be practiced as a
process for much of the learning.

- the process of reading
- the process of writing
- the often neglected skills of speaking and listening
- language conventions and usage
- reading and writing across the curriculum
- children's literature
- developing an effective language arts program
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
