DESIGNS FOR LEARNING: READING

This course will focus on developing the knowledge, skills and strategies to create a rich, stimulating,
balanced literacy program in the classroom. We will explore the nature of the reading process and
discuss structures and strategies that promote literacy acquisition throughout the grades. Current
theories supporting the teaching of reading/writing will be examined and related to classroom practice.
The interactive design of this course will enable you to examine and reflect on your understanding about
learning, the teaching of reading and your role as teacher. The following topics will be addressed:
• The Big Ideas Around Literacy
• Emergent Reading and Writing
• The Developmental Process of Reading
• Learning Environments That Promote Literacy
• The Role of the Teacher
• Reading and Writing Connections
• Cues, Clues, and Strategies Readers Use
• Using Literature to Enhance Literacy
• Reading in the Content Areas
• Balance Literary Classrooms and Best Practices
• Literacy Instruction for Special Populations
• Assessment and Evaluation to Support Learning
REQUIREMENTS:
Participants will be expected to attend class prepared to discuss assigned readings and become actively
involved in group activities. Assignments will include:

• Child Study on Reading Behaviour - Observation and Assessment (participants will work with
an elementary-age child throughout the course. It is expected that the participant will find a child
who is an early reader or a struggling reader to work with. If this is not possible the course
instructor will help make contacts in Coquitlam.)
