COURSE DESCRIFJ.ION
Students who enroll in this course will examine trends, philosophical
issues, and instructional research concerning early childhood education.
They will also engage in exercises intended to demonstrate the importance
of empirical and philosophical research to classroom instruction of young
children.
Students and teachers with an interest in the current changes to British
Columbia's education system will find this course particularly valuable as
the issues to be discussed are relevant to understanding and implementing
"Primary Program".
Topics to be discussed will be selected from the following areas:
- Historically important perspectives on ECE
- The nature and justification of child-centered education
- The value of play as an educational activity
- Whole language/basal approaches to language instruction
- The role of direct instruction in the ECE classroom
- Approaches to motivation in the classroom

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This course is intended as a basic theoretical introduction to the education of
young children in preschool, daycare, and public school settings. Major areas of
focus will include:
1.
Historical and philosophical issues in ECE.
2.
The psychological foundations of a variety of ECE instructional practices,
from teacher-directed lessons to instructionally designed play environments.
3.
Applications of selected theories relevant to instructional planning at the
preschool and primary levels.
PREREQUISITE: 60 credit hours.
