DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to the main ideas, skills, materials, resources, understandings, and
organizational concerns involved in teaching art inschools.
TOPICS
The aims of art education: the educational value of art; BC art curriculum; creativity and appreciation;
aesthetics; art history; utilizing the art gallery; personal approaches to creative work in art, including:
drawing, painting, clay, crafts, sculpture /construction, printmaking, photography/ video, mixed
media, found and recycled materials etc.; environmental concerns; local culture; first nations art;
multicultural and gender issues; integrating the arts; managing the art room; curriculum planning;
approaches to teaching; individual and group learning; evaluation of the curriculum and student
learning.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Completion of class portfolio and related assignments - 50%
2. Gallery visit and critique - 20%
3.
Personal study/ curriculum project - 30%
