COURSE DESCRIPTION
EDUC 471 - 4 will examine both the theoretical and conceptual complexity of curriculum
development. Using Pratt's text as a guide, the first half of the course will explore the development
of curriculum theory, and grapple with how various curriculum orientations impact on
educational practice. The course will pay special attention to the historical, social and political
forces that influence curriculum development including class, gender and corporate dynamics.
The second half of the course will critically examine various contemporary British Columbia IRPs
to determine their theoretical basis and conceptual soundness. Given their current popularity in
education, the instructional strategies to develop such competencies as critical and creative
thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills will be explored in detail. Other curriculum
areas may also be examined based on student interest and suggestions.
