PREREQUISITE:
60 credit hours plus a linguistics course.
DESCRIPTION
The course is designed for prospective and beginning teachers of English as a second language wishing
to learn more about theory, research, and practice in teaching English to students speaking other
languages. Through readings, discussions and class presentations/workshops we will explore current
approaches to themes in second language pedagogy like developing language skills, curriculum,
assessment, culture, grammar, integrating language and content, etc.
OBJECTIVES
• To become familiar with techniques for teaching various aspects of language in classroom situations
• To explore one's own attitudes and approaches to language learning and teaching
• To develop an awareness of the sociopolitical contexts within which second language study is
situated
ASSIGNMENTS/EVALUATION:
• Responses to readings
(25%)
• Small group workshops/presentations on course themes (25%)
• An initial personal statement of second language learning and teaching theory (10%)
• A final personal statement of second language learning and teaching theory based on reflections on
the course readings, presentations, and
discussions (30%)
• Active participation in class activities (10%)
