COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to the main ideas, skills, materials, resources, understandings and organizational
concerns involved in teaching art in B.C. Schools.
COURSE CONTENT
The goals of visual arts education in B.C.; artistic creativity and aesthetic appreciation; approaches to art history;
exploring the art gallery; hands-on experience with art media (drawing, painting, clay, crafts, sculpture/ construction,
printmaking, mixed media, fund and recycled materials, computers, etc.); safety issues; art and the environment;
integrating the arts; classroom organization; curriculum planning; approaches to teaching art; assessment and
evaluation of student achievement and programs.
OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to enable students:
• To develop and teach imaginative and educationally worthwhile programs in visual art
• To become familiar with new Visual Arts IRP
• To develop an understanding of the elements and principles of design
• To develop skills and learn techniques in making art
• To examine ideas and issues in art education
• To build a portfolio
• To become advocates of art education
