COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will, through this course, develop a personal theory of second
language teaching and learning based upon reflection upon recent relevant
theory and research, and will acquire knowledge of techniques in the
teaching of English to students speaking other languages. We will begin
with a consideration of research on the processes of first language teaching
and learning. Students will read about, discuss and practice techniques for
teaching various aspects of language in classroom situations. Students will
evaluate the appropriateness of "whole language" beliefs and techniques in
second language classrooms, and will consider the importance of regarding
second language students as bilinguals. Opportunities for forming working
groups to develop curricular materials will be provided.
EVALUATION
To be discussed first class.
