PREREQUISITE:

60 hours of credit and ENGL 370 or a Linguistics course.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Students will through this course develop a personal theory of second language teaching

and learning based on reflection upon recent relevant theory and research, and will acquire

knowledge of techniques in the teaching of English to students speaking other languages.

We will begin with a consideration of research on the processes of first language

acquisition, and discuss possible implications of this work for second language teaching and

learning. Students will read about, discuss and practice techniques for teaching various

aspects of language in classroom situations. Students will evaluate the appropriateness of

"whole language" beliefs and techniques in second language classrooms, and will consider

the importance Of regarding second language students as bilinguals. Opportunities for

forming working groups to develop curricular materials will be provided.

EVALUATION:

Your final grade in the course will be based on:

1.

An initial personal statement of second language learning theory.

2. Three reading response papers.

3.

Your choice of an action research proposal, a term paper or a collection of curriculum

materials.

4.

A final statement of second language learning and teaching theory.

5.

Class and writing group participation.
