This course is designed to explore a language communication-based approach to
the development of Language Arts.
?
As an introductory course, only basic
elements and some instructional practices will be covored.
?
The elements of
Language Arts - speaking, listening, writing, viewing and representing enable
us to make meaning of our world. Those practices which enable students to
experience literature and to
use
language with satisfaction and confidence will
be the focus of the course.
GOALS OF THE COURSE
The major goals of the course are to help student teachers acquire:
1.
Basic understanding of the nature, purpose, structure and development of
language in its oral and written forms.
2.
An understanding of some of the major language characteristics of
primary/intermediate school children.
3.
Knowledge ?

development in the language arts in clenientary school settings.
4.
Knowledge of the British Columbia Language Arts curriculum guide, the
abilities and skills which should be developed through the Language Arts
program, and materials recommended to foster that growth.
1.
Attendance and participation.
2.
A passing grade (60%) in four quizzes.
3.
Satisfactory completion of two short assignments.
4.
In-class presentation of a teaching/learning strategy.
Students may elect to complete additional requiremernis to achieve a higher
final standing.
