• is offered to pre-service teachers interested in teaching a young

clientele (4 to 8 years of age)

• will assume/expect throughout, a child-centred, creative, individ-

ualistic approach to the structuring of learning environments and

experiences

• will deal with Language Arts as a broad curriculum, involving the

integration of different subject areas

• will draw from no one particular text or program

• may complement, but will not supplant, a developmental reading

course (e.g., Education 473)

• will be demanding.

These pre-readings are required to ensure individuals undertaking

this course have, at the outset, an overview of the competencies

generally expected of pupils, and to emphasize the need for an

overall perspective prior to attempting integrated instruction.

The first session of this course will include a test on the

pre-reading materials. Performance on this test will be a

consideration in determining the final grade.

ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE:

• workshops of variable length and design

• seminars of variable length and design

• explorations of communication media (art, literature, music, photo-

graphy, film, film-strips, computers, puppetry, etc.)

• a number of directed readings

• a number of assignments designed to demonstrate selected competencies.

REQUIREMENTS:

• attendance and participation in all parts of the course

• completion of readings and assignments

• demonstration of selected competencies.
