DESIGNS FOR LEARNING: EDUCATIONAL USES OF COMPUTERS
PREREQUISITES: ?
Education 401/402 or equivalent
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the roles and applications of computers in education, and to
problems of computer use in the classroom. Brief training is given on the operation
of microcomputers, use of a sampling of exemplary programs, and the selection of
educational software. Every time the course is offered, it has an emphasis on a
different aspect of computer applications.
TOPICS:
• Use of computers in the classroom: concerns, expectations and confusions.
• Integration of educational software into the curriculum: exploration of types of
software, and means of integration.
• Computer-assisted instructional materials: design, modification and evaluation.
• Programming applications in the curriculum: choice of languages, and
consideration of approaches.
COURSE ACTIVITIES:
Lectures, demonstrations, readings, and laboratory work.
EVALUATION:
• A paper documenting the design of an application of the computer to a selected
curriculum area. (40%)
• A class presentation illustrating the use and limitation of a piece of educational
software for a selected learning task. (30%)
• Short tests related to lectures, readings, and demonstrations. (30%)
