COURSE DESCRIPTION
The process of curriculum development is informed by our own theoretical positions, whether or not
these are made explicit to our students or ourselves. In this course, we will address the following
questions: How do one's beliefs about education impact curriculum development? What curriculum
models have been implemented in various historical contexts? What alternate models have been
suggested? How do cultural and political issues influence curriculum development? What should
students' and teachers' roles be in the curriculum development process? On what moral grounds can
and should our decisions be based?
OBJECTIVES
Students are expected to be active participants in this course: they are expected to study all readings
closely, prepare journal entries and assignments in a timely manner and engage in class activities to help
create a community of inquiry. As this course requires active participation, students are expected to
attend all classes. Marks will be deducted for any missed classes. It is hoped that students will cultivate
skills related to reflexive inquiry, such as thoughtful consideration of the complexity of issues
addressed, creation of connections between theory and practice, clarification of one's position, respect
for the position of others and respect for the process of dialogue.
REQUIREMENTS
Proposed evaluation is as follows:
Journals = 30%
Group presentation = 20%
Final project = 40%
Attendance = 10%
