EDUC. 441-4 CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN EDUCATION

DESCRIPTION:
The course is designed primarily for individuals working or preparing to work in
Education - the classroom teacher, school counsellor or school administrator. It
is also relevant to workers in community social and recreational services and to any
individual concerned about educational/social issues and ways of working in a multi-
ethnic society. Roleplay, group discussion, case study, audio-visual and curriculum
materials will be used to assist participants to develop definitions of their profes-
sional roles in a multi-ethnic community.
OBJECTIVES:
The course will provide opportunities to:
1.
Identify the causes of prejudice in society and develop strategies
for dealing with conflict in the classroom.
2.
Investigate, through case study, basic cultural information
about selected immigrant and native communities in B.C.
3.
Identify techniques for learning about a culture other than
your own.
4.
Identify a range of strategies for change in classroom,
school and community and select from alternate approaches.
S. Evaluate curriculum materials for stereotyping and bias.
6.
Gain access to multi-cultural curriculum.
7.
Develop multicultural curriculum or program plans for
delivery of social and recreational services in multi-
cultural communities.
8.
Become familiar with research literature on major issues
in multicultural education: eg. equality of opportunity,
social class and school achievement, local control and
bilingual education.
ASSIGNMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS:
1. Attendance is required
2.
One short essay on a major issue: in multicultural education
3.
One series of lesson plans (or a program description)
4.
Interview with someone from cultural background other than your own
