COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an introductory course intended for beginning students with an interest in education. The course will
introduce students to a representative sample of significant questions and issues concerning education in British
Columbia. Students will explore questions and issues concerning the nature of education, differential access to
education, and the effects of media and peers on moral education. They will examine conflicting philosophies of
education, the value of present curricula, and the role of schools in educating children with special needs. Students
will also consider the roles of unions and professional organizations in schools and the effects of competition,
choice, and financing on the quality of educational experiences. Students will also examine the nature and demands
of accountability and efforts to change public schools.
