PREREQUISITE: 60 credit hours.
PURPOSE:
To provide an opportunity for the study of literacy from an interdisciplinary
perspective.
OBJECTIVES:
In the last few years literacy has become a prominent issue. For the individual,
literacy has been seen as a ticket for personal fulfillment and social advancement; for
the society at large, it has been equated with economic take-off and general well-being.
This course will explore the historical, political, social and individual implications of
the literacy issue. It will provide an opportunity for participants to explore and
analyse the many positions that scholars in different disciplines have taken on this
matter. At the same time, it will allow for the development of the participants own
theoretical and critical stances on literacy.
