COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• students will examine their own beliefs about teaching & learning science while carrying out a personal
inquiry
• students will challenge science teaching methods, study the latest strategies and propose ways to
engage
students
• students will build a repertoire of practical skills (controversy, inquiry, problems approach, etc.)
• students will develop strategies that encourage participation of all students as well as promote critical
thinking
• students will share their thoughts, ideas and experiences with their peers
ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION:
1.
Course Notebook-Unit Plan (40%) The notebook-unit plan grows out of each week's topics, the
curriculum, and peer discussions. Students will bring a selected unit from the IRP to the second class
for development throughout the course.
2.
Inquiry-Synthesis Paper (30%) The purpose of this 800-1200 word paper is to synthesize
connections in a personally meaningful way between the topics covered and teaching & learning science.
3.
Mini-presentations
(15%)
Students will present one engaging science activity during the course. This
may be done independently or in small groups.
4. Participation
(15%)
Attendance is mandatory. Students are also required to contribute to a course blog
and bring in articles on science in the news. The details will be given in class.
*Late assignments must be accompanied by a doctor's note.
REQUIRED READINGS:
Readings will be provided electronically so students must have email accounts and be prepared to access
the Internet regularly.
