COURSE DESCRIPTION
** One class will take place on Saturday, May 19th, 2007. **
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• students will examine their own beliefs about teaching science and carry out a personal inquiry
• students will challenge science teaching methods, study the latest strategies and propose ways to
engage students
• students will build a repertoire of practical skills involving the discovery method (inquiry, problems
approach)
• students will develop strategies that encourage participation of all students as well as promote critical
thinking
• students will share their thoughts, ideas and experiences with their peers
ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION:
1.
Unit Plan (40%) Time will be given each week to work on this collaborative project.
2.
Science Journal (30%) The journal will document an ongoing inquiry that takes place throughout the
course. Students will be required to email electronic versions of their journal 3 times during the course.
3.
Mini-presentations (20%) Students will present one engaging science activity during the course. This
may be done independently or in small groups.
4.
Participation (10%) Attendance is mandatory. Each missed class must be made up by completing an
extra homework assignment.
Late assignments must be accompanied by a doctor's note.
REQUIRED READINGS:
Readings will be provided electronically so students must have email accounts and be prepared to access
the Internet regularly.
