COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Description:
(From the Calendar)
An overview of theory, research and practice concerning social emotional development and social
interactions and relationships in the school context. Emphasis on the role of peer relationships in
development and the role of the school in supporting positive interactions.
Objectives:
By the end of the course, it is expected that students will
Be familiar with the main concepts and ideas that comprise a number of theories of social and emotional
development.
2.
Be familiar with the key research findings stemming from these theoretical orientations.
3. Be familiar with school-based programs aimed at supporting social and emotional development.
4. Be able to critically evaluate these programs in light of theory and research evidence.
Required Text:
Craig, W. (Ed.) (2000). Childhood Social Development: The Essential Readings. Blackwell:
Oxford, UK.
Additional readings may be required throughout the term. These will be supplied by the instructor.
