Description of the course:
Education 384 builds on a student's approved international or intercultural placement in Canada during
April 2006. (Contact Dr. Don Northey at dnorthey@sfu.ca
by March 1, 2006 to confirm placement).
Through engaging in, and reflecting upon, their educational and personal experiences in these
intercultural settings, participants will deepen their global perspectives and understanding of the role of
culture in education. This will provide the basis for application in curriculum design and interaction in
Canadian classrooms.
Course Expectations:
1.
Attend orientation sessions in preparation for practicum experience
2.
Attend biweekly seminars during May and June to discuss placement experiences, current
application ideas and the potential for developing a global perspective in your future classrooms
3.
Reflect upon and share experiences gained during the practicum
4.
Demonstrate an openness and willingness to explore issues

1. Complete an individual practicum entry on EDUC 384 website

2. Share experiences gained during in an interview with the instructor.
3. Record, analyze and discuss a critical incident which occurred during the intercultural practicum
4. Representation of practicum experience.
A. Choose a medium that will allow you to reflect upon and to depict your journey during your
practicum so that you can share these experiences. Some possible ideas are:
a.
A series of
paintings
with supporting document
b.
An I movie depicting key experiences
c.
A series of poems to capture key experiences
d.
Double entry journal entries observations, resources gathered,
learnings
about school
system, community experiences,
e.
An essay analyzing experiences
f.
Use questions/topics of interest to
Canadian
students from 405 practicum to gather and
analyze
information
gained during practicum
g.
Development of a simulation game depicting processes, intercultural issues and/or
experiences gained
h.
Development of a children's story
i.
Summaries of interviews with educators, students and/or parents
j.
Action research based on a comparison of a theme/issue in Canada and in new setting or a
theme that emerges in the new setting
B. This representation will be shared in class with class members and entered on EDUC 384
website
5.
Questions arising out of practicum experience with written discussion
A.
Through your practicum experience, many questions will arise that are relevant to education.
Select one of these questions and locate a resource that helps you explore this question
further.Write your current response to this question including examples from your
practicum experience and ideas gained from the selected resource. This report should be
about five pages.
B.
This response will be shared during class sessions members and entered on EDUC 384
website
6. Application of learnings/ideas gained. Complete A, B or C.
A.
Discuss and illustrate the implications that this experience has had on your philosophical
beliefs and could have on your classroom practice.
B.
Develop
learning
activities which incorporate resources, learning experiences and ideas from
the practicum experience
C.
Create a teaching resource reflecting/building upon the elements of the experiences and
learning
during the practicum
D.
These will be shared in class and during an interview with the instructor

Assignment completion dates will be decided once class meeting times are organized.
Evaluation
Students taking EDUC 384 for 2 credits are required to complete the practicum, assignments 1,2, and 3
plus one of the assignments 3, 4 or
5.
Those students taking the course for 4 credits are required to
complete the practicum and assignments 1 thru 6. The course is evaluated on a pass/fail basis.
