COURSE DESCRIPTION
Participants should have a basic knowledge of the use of computers and productivity software for this course, as well as an
understanding of current issues in the education of students with special learning needs. This course will provide an
introduction to the use of technology used by children with special needs in education and rehabilitation. The format
consists of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, learning station activities, group discussions, and project work. The
components of the course include: an overview of the use of technology by children with special needs, demonstration and
evaluation of software, demonstration and review of assistive technologies, strategies for integrating technology into the
curriculum and a look at the future of technology in education and rehabilitation.
This course will be held in the Regional Demonstration Centre of Special Education Technology - British Columbia (SET-
BC). Participants have access to the computers, assistive technologies, software and information resources in the Centre.
INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
Doug Bowes
presently works as a Special Needs Technology Consultant at the Vancouver Island Regional SET-BC office
in Victoria. He has worked as a Speech and Language Pathologist in the Manitoba Public School System and as a
consultant with the Manitoba Department of Education over the past 16 years.
Constance McAvoy
presently works as a Special Needs Technology Consultant at the Vancouver Island Regional SET-
BC office in Victoria. She has been involved in teaching as an Adult Education Instructor, Special Education Teacher and
Special Education Computer Coordinator over the past 24 years.

Participants will work on both individual and group assignments during this course. Assignments 1-4 will be graded by
the course instructors. Assignment 5 will be a group project. These projects will be graded by course participants using a
rating form to be issued at the beginning of the course.
