COURSE DESCRIPTION
To introduce students to recent philosophical and psychological research on the nature of both stories and mental
images as these are relevant to education; to help students become familiar with the main arguments concerning their
educational values and dangers; to introduce students to teaching techniques derived from the study of stories and
mental images and to help students apply these in practice; and to help students to better understand the roles of story
and image in children's thinking.
OBJECTIVES
Images:
• Historical conceptions of the imagination and mental images.
• Psychological research on the imagination and mental images from the nineteenth century to today.
• Philosophical conceptions of imagination and mental images in recent years.
• Techniques for teaching that use mental images and aim to stimulate the imagination.
Stories:
• The role of stories in oral cultures. ?
* Philosophical research on the nature and role of stories.
• Psychological research on stories and memorability

* Techniques for teaching that draw on story & story structure.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Reading the required texts.
2. One short paper on either story or image
-
a report and analysis of research. (8 pages max.)
3.
One longer paper (12 pages min.) on the alternative topic to that chosen for the first paper, focusing in detail on some
aspect of the topic relevant to education.
4.
1 - 2 page lesson or unit outline that incorporates ideas from the readings.
