4061 INSERVICE PRACTICUM

SUPERVISION OF STUDENT TEACHERS
Education 406 is a 5-credit professional inservice practicum
available to teachers who
a. have taken Education 490 or 496 (Developmental
Supervision of Student Teachers)p and
b, are willing to supervise an SFU student teacher
during the Spring 1986 semester.
Participants in this practicum will function as school
associates for P.D.P.students, while receiving further
training in developmental supervision. The course will
include the following components:
i.
Classroom work: focussed practice in all aspects
of student teacher supervision, under the guidance
of a trained faculty associate (30 hours);
ii.
Seminars: regular meetings of course participants,
to discuss case studies, solve problems, and
provide collegial support (10-20 hours);
iii.
Enrichment activities: scheduled activities
related to the theory and practice of supervision,
e.g., guest speakers, skills practice sessions,
demonstrations, classroom exchange visits, peer
observations (10-20 hours).
Specific assignments will address the following areas:
1. phase-in activities and collaborative planning;
ii.
analysis of teaching;
iii.
modeling and coaching;
iv.
using a variety of observation methods;
V.
analyzing and interpreting observation data
vi.
using audiovisual observation tools--audiotape,
videotape, still photography;
vii.
clarifying student teacher beliefs and values;
viii, improving one's own teaching.
Please note that admission to this course may be restricted
by district, depending on the availability of faculty
associate supervisors. Early registration is encouraged.

Education 406 (Gp 0.5) Professional In-Service Practicum
Focus: Advancing ?
Improving Educational Practice
This practicum is offered for practicing teachers who wish
to further-their teaching skills in those professional
functions that work towards (a) the creation of more humane
learning environments; (b) the development of self-directed,
autonomous learners; (c) the development of curriculum which
engages pupils in active learning experiences; (d) the prom-
otion of higher-order thinking capabilities. In this prac-
ticum, the teacher's own classroom will serve as the labora-
tory in which teaching is studied, and in which individual
professional development will be promoted.
Education 406 (Gp 5) will include both classroom work
(practicum) and analysis of classroom work (seminars).
The seminars will be held on Thursdays, tentatively in the
evenings. The identification and articulation of teaching
objectives; the examination of classroom functioning with
respect to teaching objectives and training, in individually
selected teaching functions will be emphasized.
Education 406 (Gr 5) is intended for practicing teachers
with a background in open education who have preferably
served as School Associates for S.F.U.'s Open Education
Alternative (OEA).
