Learning and Evaluation
Spring , 1977
Instructor; Jack Martin
This course examines classroom learning and evaluation of
Pupil performance from both pragmatic and philosophic perspectives.
The first part of the course introduces and discusses basic
p
rinciples and techniques of classroom instruction and evaluation
as these relate to the facilitation of pupil learning. During
this section, students will produce complete plans (statements
of obje-tives, descriptions of learning activities, tools for
evaluation and assessment) for a short, but detai'ed,
instructional
unit.
The second part of the course will analyze the theoretical
approaches to classroom learning taken by Carl Rogers and
B. F.
Skinner. Students will be asked to constructively debate
these two positions and to produce written
critiques of
their
own instructional plans on the basis of these discussions.
Evaluation will be based on the written assignments referred
to above
(70%)
and a final oral examination (30%).
Texts for the course will be
1.
Skinner, The Technology of Teaching
2.
Rogers, Freedom to Learn.
Other readings will be assigned on a regular basis.
This course is reasonably demanding of student time and effort;
