PREREQUISITES:
The minimal prerequisites are those that would normally
be gained through 4-5 years of music study: ability to read music, experience in
singing, some knowledge of piano or other instrument and of basic rudiments.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
In musicianship: Main emphasis on MUSIC LITERATURE analysis. Thorough
CANADIAN FOLKSONG study. Systematic MUSICIANSHIP training. Through
SOLFEGE-THEORY study participants gain musical confidence in eartraining,
sight singing and dictation. A unified AURAL-ORAL-WRITTEN approach is
offered.
In pedagogy: special lectures on Kodály philosophy and on practical
realization of the Kodály concept. How to teach masterpieces in elementary
school. How to teach reading and writing to young children. How should music
become more again an art in the classroom.
MOM
In musicianship: Identification and singing of major and minor scales, modes,
all intervals within the octave. Triads. Improvisation and composition
connected with analysis. Polyphonic activities: part singing, singing while
clapping an ostinato, singing while playing another part on the piano.
In pedagogy: practice teaching is an integral part of study. 10-15 minutes mini-
procedures are presented by instructor and repeated by participants.

EVALUATION:
Term mark: 70%. Test mark: 30%
Term mark includes: 1/ Individual and small group performance of musical
tasks assigned as homework. 2/ Three written dictation tests. 3/ Memorization
of 7 Canadian Folksongs and 10 instrumental themes. --Test mark includes:
1/ Performance from the accumulated homework material. 2/ Quiz - based on
lecture material.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
To pass the course, every student must be able to sing from memory the 7
Canadian Folksongs and the 10 themes.
