Geography 486: Health Care Geographies
Together we will explore health care and health services using a geographic lens, with a focus on lived
and experiential aspects of care. This course is structured around broad topical areas that reflect key
issues
in
this exciting and innovative area of geographic inquiry. Underlying questions we will address
include: what are the origins of health care and health services research in health
geography~
what are
the spatial and place-based dimensions of health care and health serVices; how does a health geography
. approach assist with understanding issues of access; what are the spatial components of new fonns of
health care; and how do care environments (e.g., home, hospital, clinic, community) impact how people
experience health care? To address these questions we will touch on topics such as primary health
care, palliative care, informal care giving, and medical tourism. Students will also enhance their
familiarity with the dynamic nature of the health geography subdiscipline, including its origins and
interdisciplinary
nature.
