ATTENTION Bill Krane, Chair of
SCUS
I FROM Leslev Cormack. Dean of FASS
I RE Closing Collaborative Major with TRU
I DATE June 3,2010
FASS would like to permanently close the Collaborative Major Program with
Thompson Rivers University
by applying policy 09-42R. Would you please bring
this decision to SCUS? Admission into the progranl has already been suspended.
There have been
no students in this program in the past five years. TRU never
received Ministerial approval
to offer the progrrun. Additionally, our faculty will
have a major in First Nations Studies as of September.
I have consulted with the F ASS undergraduate curriculum committee and they are
unanimously in favour of closing the program. TRU has been notified of the
decision.
Please find attached
the proposal to tenninate the Collaborative Major program.

Proposal
to permanently close the Collaborative Major Program
'Nith
Thompson
Rivers
University
1)
The credential being terminated is the Collaborative Major Program with
Thompson Rivers
University.
2) The program is located at SFU Kamloops and Thompson Rivers University.
3) The program was offered through TRU and included courses from the following
SFU departments: from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the departments
of Linguistics} Sociology/Anthropology, Archeology, History, and the First
Nations Studies
Program; from the Faculty of the Environment, Geography; from
the Faculty of
Science, Mathematics.
4) Anticipated final dissolution date: January 2011.
5) Reasons for discontinuance and dissolution of the program:
a) Senate has approved the closing ofSFU's Kamloops campus. It will be
entirely shut by the spring of
2011 if not sooner. Applications for the
CqJlaborative Major Program were not accepted for this academic year
(2009/10).
b) There has been virtually no uptake on this program. There has not been a
single student enrolled in it in the past
five
years.
6) Plan for termination of the program:
a) Faculty and staff at Kamloops
have
been notified of the closing of the
Kamloops site.
The courses being offered in the program
will
continue to be
offered in Burnaby.
b) Students have not been able
to enroll in the program this year. There are no
students enrolled
in
it at present. Students were notified of the closing of the
Kamloops campus
in February.
c) Resources will be directed towards the First Nations Studies Program on the
Burnaby campus.
d) None of our faculties and departlnents
is impacted by the closing because
there are
no students in the program.
e)
TRU has been notified of the proposed termination. See attached.
fJ
Timeline of activities: the departments have been consulted by the Associate
Dean
at a curriculum committee nleeting in May 2010.
7) The current calendar language reads "Applications are not being accepted for the
2009/2010 academic year." In the 2011 calendar, all references to the program
will be deleted.
8) Paul Budra, Associate Dean, faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (budra@sfu.ca
24416) should be contacted if (nore infonnation is needed.

Dear Katherine:
As I'm sure you're away, SFU will be closing its Kamloops campus in the near future.
This will mean that it will no longer be possible for SFU to offer its porcion of the
Collaborative Major with TRU. I am about to begin the process of having the major
removed from the SFU calendar; we have already frozen admissions into the program.
I
don't imagine this will cause much of a stir for either of our institutions. As far
as
I
can tell, no student has taken advantage of this program in the past five years.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers.
